I knew I was dreaming. It didn’t really matter. I just wanted it to never end. I wanted that to become my life. A life where everything seemed to go my way. Where events had no order, where nothing was important. A life where no story could be built. Everything that happened was fun, and that was the point.
The last thing I remember was fighting a phantom. I knew I couldn’t see the phantom, but I had defeated it. Our fight was more of an illusion than anything. We sort of flew around and around each other. We told ghost stories, we told jokes, we laughed, but most importantly we drew swords and fought. The next to last thing, or first, or second, I don’t remember now and I don’t remember ever remembering. Still, whatever happened before the phantom duel had me running from a swarm of infinitely small creatures I couldn’t see. They came in several colors, I thought. They could jump and glide through the air, while I could only run in hopes of avoiding them. I knew where they were because they left trails of color as they flew. Early on in the race they were already ahead of me and had encircled me, yet I still ran as if my life depended on it. Even though I couldn’t see them individually, I could see what they were doing. They flew in peculiar patterns, and little by little they painted a sky, a ground, and a path. There was a finish line and I apparently crossed it first because after that they were gone.
The last thing I remember is descending towards a place that had no floor, no ceiling, and seemingly no space at all. I stood where I did because there was nowhere else to stand. I moved like I did because there was no other way to move. I went forward because that was the only way to advance. I ran and flew and fought the way I did because that was the way the things that happened did. The first thing I remember was standing before an abyss that had a small sign on its edge. The sign read, “Those who dare abandon themselves will live the life of dreams. A life where the things that happen, will.” I thought it was an interesting quote and for the life of me, I don’t remember what I did next. Surely and most probably, I closed my eyes and hoped to dream the dream I had.
